Overview of the department
This department of Biochemistry was started in 2004 as a subsidiary subject for Bachelor of Science. This department has one Associate Professor Mr Laltanpuia, who is currently taking the charge of Principal and three Associate Professors.
Biochemistry, sometimes called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. By controlling information flow through biochemical signaling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. The main focus of pure biochemistry is on understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of tissues, organs, and whole organisms that is, all of biology.
Biochemistry career opportunities can be virtually limitless: private research institutions, hospitals, government agencies, social and non-profit organisations all hunt for good biochemists. Their goals are usually similar – to research, experiment, conduct trials and find cures for diseases like cancer and AIDS and even mental disorders. Pharmaceuticals keep a sharp eye out for biochemistry professional. Private R&D jobs are among the most lucrative options for a newly minted biochemist.
